After a successful career in public education and Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, Karleen Werk has been retired for 15 years and is living in Tucson, Arizona. She has strong family ties to New Mexico and visits several times a year. Her family and friends are the welcome recipients of her life-long interest in creative cooking, particularly concentrating on Southwest and Mexican cuisine. She also has a keen interest in a variety of seafood creations derived from living on Whidbey Island in Washington State for 20 years.

Karleen's accomplishments include winning first place in the Annual Mussel Recipe Contest sponsored by the Captain Whidbey Inn in Coupeville, Washington in 1988. Her award winning original recipe is called Mussel Ravioli with Lemon Thyme Sauce. She was also published in Gourmet Magazine in June, 1997 for her recipe for Spinach Salad with Chile Pepper Dressing. She also won the 2010 Chef's Gala, sponsored by chefs from the Robson Retirement Communities in Arizona and Texas. Her winning dish was Chicken and Rice Stuffed Poblano Chiles with Black Bean Sauce and Mango Pico de Gallo.

Karleen currently teaches three cooking classes in her home. She identifies the classes by calling them the Chipotles, the Jalapenos and the Habaneros. Classes are limited to four students, and are held once a month. These classes have the added benefit of providing interesting and meaningful interaction between members of her retirement community, as the students happily enjoy the results of their very creative culinary achievements. In addition, the families of her students applaud the exemplary efforts of the cooking groups.
