CleanSpace One Orbital Debris Eliminator Concept - Will It Work?

February 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

Over the years, I've spent a good amount of time considering the challenge of space debris. Specifically what to do about it, yes, it has been the topic of conversation of at many of our think tank meetings over the years as well. We all know this is a huge problem, one we must take care of, otherwise Private Space Flight will be too dangerous, and the insurance for such companies will make it unfeasible. Okay, let's talk.

One of my first concepts was to use a modified Whipple Shield to catch the flying debris, by maneuvering it around in various orbits, perhaps 5-10 of these types of units working as giant catcher's mitts, each one seeking out the nearest debris in its flight path. Then, I had the concept of recycling some of this debris as it is filled with REEs and other very expensive hardware, and components, that concept never got any attention back in the late 90s.

Now I see a new scheme put forth by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. "CleanSpace One" is a space probe that would grab the space debris, even full on dead satellites, and then set them on a new trajectory and hurl them towards Earth at the appropriate time to burn up in the atmosphere and fall far from human civilization. This is a good concept, cite: Wall Street Journal, February 18, 2012, Article Titled "Cleanup Space Time" on page C-4.

Still, what about DARPA's concept about grabbing the 10s of billions of dollars of expensive materials and components to re-use them, kind of like a recycling unit in space? Well, how about a combo plan. Here is what I propose;

-Use a Combination of a Whipple Shield (mentioned above) -Use the CleanSpace One Concept

Then we use a system which would wrap the worthy pieces in cocoon of carbon nano tube sheets, send the smaller pieces to Earth protected by the cocoon, with a small computer chip tracker to go pick it up later. Tie the larger pieces together for later use, leave them in a sealed bag, flying all together for later use using DARPA's concept.

If we don't solve this problem we will endanger our satellite communication systems, future space missions, and the budding new industry which may allow average people to travel to space and see from that perspective how beautiful this pale blue dot really is and how fortunate we are to be here at all. Please consider all this and think on it.
