3 Famous Granite Monuments

Granite is one natural stone that is used for several purposes from dimension stone to countertops to sculptures. The use of granite for building the temples and monuments was initiated millions years ago by the Egyptians although their architectural techniques were experimental but they have given a true sense of architecture to the world.

Granite belongs to the class of intrusive igneous rocks that contains medium to coarse grained structure. Feldspar, quartz, mica, silica are some of the basic chemical compounds that are found in granite. Each of these chemical compounds exhibit one or other qualities of granite stone for instance Quartz is responsible for its hardness and Alkali Feldspar gives different colours to granite stone. This chemical composition of granite makes it robust and durable stone that can withstand any temperature or weather condition.

Popular Monuments of Granite!

Thayer Monument It is basically a monument and statue of Sylvanus Thayeris made out of white granite and is located in United States Military Academy. It was showcased publicly for the first time in year 1883 and was designed by C. Conrad.

He is one of the most appreciable figures of the Military academy that had given some impactful memories during his early years of service and is also known as "Father of Military Academy". The location of this monument has been changing and currently it is located near Highland Falls, New York.

Ludlow Monument It is one of the memorable granite monuments that was designed in the honour of victim of Ludlow massacre and Hugh Sullivan was its creator. It is located at Ludlow, Colorado and unveiled in year 1918.

Ludlow monuments have a carved pillar with a man standing in front and a lady sitting with a baby. This piece of architecture was erected by the mine workers of America.

 Signers Monument It is the depiction of three signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence that is magnificently constructed in granite stone and in obelisk style. It is located in Augusta, Georgia.

Signers' monument is about 12 feet square at the base and is fifty feet in height that is surrounded by iron rods. In the southern face of the monument a marble slab is fixed that carved the names of those three signatories; George Walton, Lyman Hall and Button Gwinnet.

These are some of the remarkable examples of granite monuments that exhibit the true sense of honour, bravery and freedom.
