How to Find a Great Freelance Writer When You Need Content for Your Website

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you are a busy person. I can correctly assume this because almost every person involved in online business is a busy person. When you are being pulled in a million directions at once you don't have a lot of time to hassle with content creation or the writer that is providing you with your content. Perhaps you have had several freelance writers who have quit on you, completely misunderstood the assignment, or just turned in work that was not up to your standard. If you have had a continual problem with freelancers, then there is a way to ensure that you get more productive writers on your team.

While I maintain a "no blame" zone, the problem could lie with your actions, and not those of the freelancer. Don't get me wrong, most freelance writers out there are not worth your money, however there are a few classic mistakes that clients make that result in a bad freelance writer experience. These are:

1) a lack in clear objectives or a miscommunication of intent.2) looking in the wrong place.3) treating your writer like a commodity instead of an investment.

Lets look at each of these mistakes more closely.

As a client you have an obligation to communicate your goals clearly and directly as possible. You are busy enough already, don't create more work for yourself by having a writer that is shooting in the dark and turning in content that is not what you are looking for. Writers are not psychic and probably have no idea how your company/website/etc. works. If you do not know what content you want, then maybe it is not time to be hiring a writer. This is not to say that you have to do all the work for them, but you should have a clear picture of what you want and are able to communicate that desire to others.

The next mistake that most people needing content make is looking for their writer in the wrong place. Consider this example; when you go to a bar you are not looking for your future spouse, you are looking for a one night stand. The same goes for your freelance writer. Don't go looking for a person that is integral to the success of your business in a seedy place like a bidding site. You are not going to find marriage material there I can promise you that.

The last mistake that I am going to discuss is that most clients are of the opinion that writers are a means to an end, with that end making them the most profit possible. This is the wrong attitude to have towards your writer. The difference between a successful and unsuccessful online website is quality content. Stop expecting to get wonderful content for $5 or even $10. Most professional freelance writers charge anywhere between $20 and $50 for an article. If this is too steep for you, then do not have a website. You need writers to provide the content for your long-term success. Do not starve the people that you need to make money.

When you re-frame your thought process and actions to accommodate these simple facts, you will see your production and bottom line increase, even though you have to invest more money up-front.
