What Is Gout?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 185

In your body, there is a heterocyclic compound composed of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen. This is a salt-forming compound that is highly associated with kidney stones. But aside from kidney problems, you can also develop another disease when you have large concentrated amounts of uric acid in your blood. This condition is called gout.

Gout is actually a form of arthritis, a disease that is characterized by tender and swollen joints. If you develop gout, it signals that you already have tiny crystals of urate in the tissues of your body, particularly in your joints. Gout is a disease that often occurs chronically, meaning it lasts for long periods of time, and can just as well cause kidney stones to form.

There are a number of symptoms you can watch out for just in case you already have gout. Recurring attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis is the most obvious of these symptoms. Most affected of this disease is the metatarsal-phalangeal joint at the base part of your big toe. You may also feel pain in the other joints of your body like in your knees, wrists, fingers, ankles and heels. This pain usually manifests at night and lasts for around four hours. Other symptoms may include fever and extreme sense of fatigue especially in the affected joint areas.

Gout actually has its traces in your genes, if a member of your family has already had the said disease. In fact, you would find that more than 50% of gout cases are anchored on people's genetic make-up. You should watch your diet as well because there are foods that can also cause or at least increase your chances of contacting gout. These foods include meat, seafood and those high in sugar. On the other hand, dairy products as well as foods with caffeine and vitamin C decrease your risk exposure to gout.

In other remote cases, gout can also be contacted along with different diseases especially those related to metabolism. Hypertension, insulin resistance and obesity are among the most familiar cases that come along with complications of gout.

However much gout seems to be complicated and severe, you would be quite glad to know that you can still take medications and undergo treatments for it. But still, it is better to engage in preventive measures like maintaining a healthy lifestyle without bad habits and consuming the right kind of food or take advice from your doctor.
