Is Having a Bath Safe When You Are Pregnant?

April 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 131

Pregnancy is both exciting and terrifying especially if you are pregnant for the first time. Many of us can't read enough pregnancy books and stalk the pregnancy forums to get as much information as possible because after all we want to ensure the absolute best for our baby and to stay as healthy as possible. However, one thing you will work out very quickly is that there is a lot of conflicting information and advice out there.

One key topic of debate is whether having a bath is safe when you are pregnant.

The answer is YES - as long as the water temperature is comfortably warm and not too hot. If it is too hot it will raise your core body temperature which can in turn distress the baby as it is unable to regulate its temperature - unlike you. So the best way to gauge what is comfortable is if you can get into the bath easily - if yes, you should be fine. If you have to ease yourself in bit by bit then its too hot! Also a too hot bath will affect your skin colour - turning it red and you may start to sweat - all signs it's too hot!

So if you can get the temperature right, a bath is a wonderful thing to help get you through your pregnancy. The warmth will help both you and those tight muscles relax. When pregnant your cervix is closed so there is no worries about products affecting the baby, however essential oils are able to penetrate through the skin as well as via inhalation. Essential oils are incredibly powerful aids but not all are safe to use in pregnancy. It's therefore of utmost importance that you choose oils that are safe for you and your baby such as the Simply Pregnant range for example and others also containing an essential oil blend designed especially for pregnancy and also post birth whilst you are breastfeeding. The oils in the blend need to have been selected to relax aching muscles, help with irritability and tension, help with fluid retention and stretch marks and generally leave you with a wonderful sense of well-being.

When choosing an oil blend, one recommendation is to look for one which contains 100% natural uplifting Bergamot and Sweet Orange, calming Neroli, gentle Mandarin, enlivening Rosewood and relaxing Patchouli. The combination of these essential oils gives a gentle sweet orange citrus scent. Many would recommend a bath oil which also contains moisturising Sunflower Oil, skin softening Sweet Almond Oil and nourishing Jojoba oil to totally pamper the skin. All are rich in essential vitamins, protein and linoleic acid, leaving the skin nourished and with a glow. Look for products which contain Evening Primrose oil, which is a rich source of the skin strengthening fatty acid GLA which will help leave your skin feeling silky smooth and moisturised. Also, it is also known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Look for a bath foam which uses gentle naturally derived cleansers and no harmful SLS ingredients. This does result in a slightly reduced foam mass to normal SLS bath foams.

So hopefully this puts the record straight and you can now indulge in a warm bath that is not only relaxing but will really help your skin and is beneficial to you and your baby! Happy bathing!
