Aromatherapy In The Work Environment

May 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 236

Different smells affect our mood in different ways, and hence our behaviour.

Aromatherapy is used at home and in a clinical environment when you go for a treatment. It makes sense to extend its use to the work environment. The work environment in this day and age is also quite often home!

If working in an office environment, different outcomes are required at different times.

For concentration or mental alertness, try a blend of 3 drops basil (Ocimum basilicum), 3 drops lemon (Citrus limon) and 2 drops rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis). This blend can be very helpful if a meeting is to be held that requires people to be attentive and have input. You could also alternate the lemon with lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) or petitgrain (Citrus aurantium amara orange petitgrain) which are both very helpful oils for mental fatigue and anxiety. Peppermint is also excellent, but is quite strong so no more than 2 drops for the blend.

For the work place in general, to encourage a cheerful mood, you can't look past essential oils from the citrus family. There are several:

Orange sweet (Citrus sinensis)

Orange bitter (Citrus aurantium var. amara)

Lemon (Citrus limon)

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)

Tangerine (Citrus reticulata blanco var. tangerine)

Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium amara orange petitgrain)

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

Select two citrus oils and use 3 drops of each. Add 2 drops of cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) or juniper (Juniperus communis) to complete the blend.

On some occasions, for various reasons, staff may become stressed or anxious. This can be due to volume of work, not sure how to proceed with a certain task, or even feeling like personal space has been compromised.

Essential oils that are very useful to assist with stress and anxiety are: frankincense (Boswellia carteri), lavender (Lavendula angustafolia), geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), bergamot, peppermint (Mentha piperita), basil, rosemary, sandalwood (both Santalum album and Santalum spicatum) and orange sweet. There are many other oils to help in this regard.

There are several ways to administer essential oils in the office. An easy way is to use electric burners. The oils are placed directly on the burner, no water is necessary. The burners can't catch fire as they don't get hot enough, but they do need regular cleaning.

In a boardroom for a meeting, burners can be used if the room is small enough. Sometimes meeting rooms can be quite large, and if this is the case it would be better to have sprays pre-prepared and the air sprayed before the meeting starts. Another option would be to have centrepieces on the table (such as flowers or herbs in glass or ceramic bowls) and have scented pads (cotton or absorbant) hidden in the arrangements.

Another hint for blends is to make larger quantities of the individual blends. Put them in larger bottles and that way you already have your blend ready. Just multiply the individual blend to the size you want and store in a dark colored bottle.

Please remember that essential oils are therapeutic by nature and if at all unsure make sure you contact a qualified aromatherapist.
