Crown Moudling- A New Decorative definition for your Home/Office

By definition, a moulding is an ornamental piece of wood, metal, or plaster, used to decorate or outline something. It can be used on the interior or exterior of a home. Mouldings frame walls, ceilings, windows, and door openings.

Crown Moulding is the decorative trim used to transition from wall to ceiling, adding a subtle elegance to any room. Sometimes it is spelled "crown moulding". Choosing a crown moulding is as important as choosing a frame for an expensive painting. If it is too big or gaudy in relation to your home design, it becomes the focus of attention. If it is too small or simple, it can look cheap and cheapen what it frames. In a home-the largest single purchase of your life-this is obviously not ideal. Trim is so important, in fact, that often people choose to go with custom crown mouldings, in order to settle in on the exact look to frame their home design, to match their own personal style.

Crown moulding is typically applied along the seams where ceiling meets wall. Usually it is not placed flush against the wall nor against the ceiling. Instead, when viewed from the moulding's end (or as a cross-section), it, the ceiling, and the wall form a "hollow" triangle. This adds a difficulty to the installation process, namely the need for complex cuts to form corners where two walls meet.

Installing crown moulding in your home is an excellent way to increase the beauty of your home and increase its value at the same time. In fact, crown moulding can add glamour to your home. Most home builders do not install crown moulding unless it is a custom-built home. In addition, Crown Moulding Installationduring the initial construction of a house can be very expensive.

Before you nail any moulding to the wall you need to do a little prep.

1. you need to locate all the studs in your walls and the ceiling joist. This is easily done with a stud finder. Make some light pencil marks that you can see as you nail your crown moulding up.

2. you need to figure out which way your ceiling joists are running. This important because if for example you are installing crown moulding in a square room you will only have nailers for the top of your crown moulding on two of the four walls. Joists almost always run from the front of your house to the back, but take the time to be sure with your stud finder.

Now this leaves two walls where there is no nailer for the top of your crown moulding. So you need to make nailers. You do this by holding a small piece of scrap moulding against the wall and ceiling how it will be install.

Notice there will be a triangle gap behind the moulding. You need to make nailers the size of that triangle gap out of wood. I like to use 5/4" x 4" pine to cut my triangle nailers, but you can just use 2" x 4" also.

Another easy way to find the size of your triangle nailer is to use a framing square as the wall and ceiling and place the crown moulding in the square how it will sit on the wall and ceiling. Now you see the triangle gap and the square has the measurements right on it. Be sure to deduct at least 1/8" to 1/4" off your triangle nailer measurement.

The nailer doesn't have to fit perfect behind the moulding to work effectively.

3.The last thing you want is the nailer forcing your moulding not to sit flush against the wall andceiling. So leave a little room.

4.Next install the nailers on the walls without ceiling nailers. Hold the nailer against the wall and ceiling and pre drill the nailer with a counter sink drill bit into the studs on the walls. Next use a 3" coarse thread drywall screw to attach to the stud.

5.Next you need a reference line on the wall at the height the crown moulding should sit on the wall. I do this by taking a piece of scrap moulding placing it against the wall and ceiling properly and then scribing a pencil mark on the wall at the bottom of the moulding.

6.Now go around the room and make marks in all the corners and several points along the wall. You could also use a chalk line and mark the corners and then snap lines around the room. This can be a pain if you are by yourself and also messy if you are working in a room with furniture and carpet. Now your prep is done.

You now have located all your nailers in the walls and ceiling and know where you are going to nail. Where there were no nailers you installed them and you also know how and at what height you want your crown moulding to sit on the wall.
