Archery - Basics of Traditional Wooden Arrows

October 14, 2011 | Comments: 0 | Views: 142

Traditional archery arrows are vastly different, yet today they are still the same and come in traditional and primitive styles.

The technology has improved immensely, but they are still made of wood. The types of wood have changed very little. In my youth it was birch and pine mainly because I think they were plentiful and cheap. As times changed cedar became the standard of the woods. The types of woods vary by hardness, straightness, easiness of dyeing, durability and ease of construction. Ash is heavy, durable and not very straight. Lodgepole pine could be made in a laminated form that is extremely straight and very durable. Cedar is light in weight straight, durable and retains a pleasant aroma. Spruce, birch and poplar are still used for some standard box wood arrows. Ramin is heavy but is prone to bending and is primarily used for some youth arrows because of price. Douglas fir is heavy but is less straight. Maple is beautiful wood and is heavy, straight and durable. Hickory is durable but not very straight. Bamboo is tough and constructed in youth arrows with some custom applications. The main wood that is still the standard is cedar, which takes a nice stain and could be very colorful.

Some of the woods are very susceptible to humidity and warp very easily. They can, however, be straightened.

Wooden arrows have some inconsistent grain patterns and might be prone to flight deviations.

Some advantages of wood is that it is cheaper, easy to work with and you can build your own custom arrow to whatever specifications and designs you like. They could be made with all different makes of vanes that the maker chooses to use. They could be constructed of plastic or real feathers for the primitive arrows. Arrows could be constructed in the traditional box or in the primitive order using the traditions of the past. Cutting arrows to an exact size is easy also.

Youth arrows are still constructed in 24", 26" or 28" and could be made 5/16", 11/32" or 23/64" in diameter.

Always remember to never store your arrows laying down. Store them standing vertical and never ever leave them stored in a quiver to protect the vanes.

When retrieving arrows from a target you should have an arrow extractor. It saves not only the arrow but also the hands.

A word of caution is never to use a wooden arrow in the speedier compound bows because they just might split and shatter. Use only the longbow or recurve for the best results, and most enjoyment and just plain fun.

There are a lot of American craftsmen making wooden arrows along with the British, so there is always a lot to choose from.

Happy Straight Shooting.

Once you are bitten by the bug so to speak into using a traditional wooden longbow and wooden arrows you will begin having a lot of fun and excitement in the traditional archery way.
