Self Help For Panic and Anxiety From An Ancient Culture

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 203

Self help for panic and anxiety comes in many forms. Of course, the opposite of self help is the type of help that comes from other sources. One of the most common sources that can be helpful in getting through a stage where panic and anxiety is dominating one's life comes by way of prescription medications. Certainly, we all want our doctors to be aware of each and every malaise that inflicts us, but many of us prefer not to start down the tranquilizer path if this can be avoided. So, the question becomes is there a reliable method that can be helpful in overcoming anxiety and panic attacks? In this article, we will examine something that has proven helpful to many people.

An Ancient Practice

More than 5,000 years ago someone started practicing yoga. Somewhere along its line of development yoga became intertwined with religion and culture. Putting that aside, using yoga is a great way for people to control their thoughts. When panic takes over our thoughts we have lost control of them. So, it becomes very apparent how yoga can be beneficial to someone who is suffering from reoccurring anxiety or panic attacks.

When panic is starting to develop, we tend to become afraid of the thoughts that are passing through our heads and the feelings overcoming our bodies. At this point, we tend to think the very worst and we become extremely afraid of what might happen to us. More than anything else it is the unknown that frightens us. In short, panic develops because we lose control of our thoughts.

Imagining Our Way to Calmness

With panic, there is always a struggle between what is occurring to us in reality and what we are imagining could be happening to us. It was Emile Coue who said, "When the imagination and will power are in conflict, are antagonistic, it is always the imagination which wins, without any exception." There is amazing wisdom in this statement! When it is analyzed in regards to panic and anxiety you can see how it rings true. In a way, we usually imagine ourselves into a panic attack. Of course, what we desire to do is the exact opposite but the harder we try to fight off panic the faster it seems to develop.

However, when we practice yoga, meditation or even ordinary relaxation techniques, we start to develop thought patterns we can fall back on at times when panic seems to be heading toward us. One of the commonalities amongst yoga and meditation and most relaxation techniques is deep breathing. Sometimes, simply breathing slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth will relieve stress. Though this simple technique can relieve us of simple stress we often need quite a bit more than this to overcome anxiety and/or panic. Yoga can supply us with the additional stress relieving qualities simple deep breathing cannot supply because of Yoga's ability to also help us control our thoughts and therefore our imaginations.
