Panic Attacks and Anxiety - Afraid of Heights?

April 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 257

Ever had that feeling of falling when you're on high places and you're looking down? Dizzy? Do your knees buckle and shake just like mine? Scared of heights? You ARE not alone. Millions of people suffer the same. It's called Acrophobia. It is a debilitating condition. But there is HOPE. Just like me, you can be FREE! Here's how.

Tips on How to Overcome Fear of Heights

  1. Learn to Control the Physical Symptoms - when faced with an imminent threat with this condition, take slow, deep breaths. Repeat it. This slows down the heart rate. This increases the oxygen flow in the muscle and prevents it from tensing up.
  2. Take some time to Meditate - a few minutes of pausing is helpful. Close your eyes. Massage your nape. Flex your arms. Even a little stretching can do wonders.
  3. Listen to Relaxing Music - this calms your nerves. It distracts you from the fear. Choose some nature sounds as well, rain, or chirping birds, or waterfalls.
  4. Avoidance - although this may not overcome the fear. It can still work. How? By avoiding anything that can cause the condition. You become sensitive to the triggers. It's a double-edged sword. Try it anyway.
  5. Psychotherapy Treatment - this procedure digs into the very root cause of the problem. It confronts the problem head on. Face your fears and win.
  6. Behavioral Therapy - this involves treating the condition right away. There are a lot of methods that can be used. Here are some:
  • Desensitization - it involves exposing you gradually to the amount of height you fear. Progresses from your least fearful situation to your most fearful one. This allows you to adjust gradually and eventually overcome the fear.
  • Flooding - this is the opposite of desensitization. It involves scaring you to death. If you survive this, and I know you will, the fear goes away. It's like a dose of cold water to a sleeping person. Unpleasant but it will shake the fear out of your boots. LOL!
  • Medication - anti-depressants will not remove the fear. It will just calm you down. If the above methods don't cure you, neither this. It will help though. Side effects are expected.

People, more than a million, are afraid of heights. It could be as simple as walking up a stepladder, viewing from a balcony or a skyscraper. But, with much attention and treatment, it can be overcome. Take it from me. Knowing your dedication has successful overcome the fear will let your imagination soar to new heights! Make that move NOW.
