Mood disorders are one of the most common health problems in modern society. As an example; roughly 50 million American adults suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder. Thus it comes as no surprise that use of antidepressants has exploded in the recent years. However at the same time numerous people have discovered that they can control their moods very well with natural alternatives that don't have the same side effects than prescription drugs. Here are four herbs that have provided relief for many people suffering from anxiety.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is a well known and popular herbal mood enhancer. St. John's Wort is a plant growing in many parts of Europe, Asia and North America. The active, mood affective component in St. John's Wort is called hypericin. St. John's Wort has been proven to be safe with minimal side effects. Yet many studies have shown that can be very effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety. St. John's Wort is inexpensive and widely available as capsules and tinctures.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is another popular herbal medicine. It is extracted from the leaves of Ginkgo Biloba tree, one of the oldest living tree species in the world. The active compounds of Ginkgo leaves include flavonoids and terpenoids which are believed to be potent antioxidants. Ginkgo Biloba works by improving cerebral circulation thus improving memory and most of the times also benefiting depression. Ginkgo is not usually as effective herb as St. John's Wort but is at its best when taken together with other herbs and nutrients.

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is a perennial plant growing in cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Its roots have long been used to improve both physical and mental wellbeing, and to reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress. Rhodiola Rosea is considered to be an adaptogen, a substance that helps normalizing body's response to various stress factors. Numerous studies have shown that Rhodiola Rosea is safe and can be very effective in alleviating depression and anxiety. Rhodiola Rosea can also improve attention span and memory.

Camu Camu

Berries of tropical rainforest plant called Camu Camu have the highest known levels of vitamin C in the world. The berries contain also numerous nutrients that can boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and fight bacteria and viruses.
