How to Care for Antique Pieces

June 29, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 223

The methods of taking care of antiques are quite different from that for modern pieces. These antiques have been in use for quite a long time and have been produced in different way. Due to this they should be taken care of in a special way. This will help preserve them in order to keep them bright for years to come. The method of cleaning is quite specific for these pieces of furniture. Using general cleaning methods can ruin the surfaces of these old pieces. For example, adhesives and polishes have been known to negatively affect the look of the furniture. This could lead to a deduction in the value of the pieces.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Therefore, you should ensure that you take excellent care of your furniture so that they are not damaged. In order to do so, you need to be aware of all the things that can damage the pieces. Some of the things that can damage your antiques include direct sunlight. This degrades the finishing on the wood. Hence, to avoid this, you should ensure that you keep all tables away from direct sunlight. In addition, pest and insects such as ants and cockroaches can also ruin these tables. You should ensure that you get rid of any insects in your house.

Antiques can also be ruined when they dry out. When the furniture dries out, it starts to lose its lackluster. Therefore, instead of looking for remedies such as oil to rub on, you should prevent the drying out. This means that you should not place any of the pieces near areas that are hot. These include places like the attic or heating vents. In addition, placing chairs near air conditioning systems or fireplaces can also cause them to dry out. Hence, it is wise that you ensure that all your antiques are placed far away from such areas.

Stains are such a major problem on these antiques. You should always avoid any stains on any of the pieces. When you have a spill on the tables, you should blot it out immediately. If you leave the spill to stay on for long, you might end up with a stubborn stain. This not only affects the appearance of the piece but also reduces its value. In addition, you should also not let dust settle for too long on any of the antique pieces. This can be handled by regular wiping of the surfaces using lint free clothes. This can be done daily or weekly depending on the amount of dust around.

When caring for antiques, you also need to pay keen attention to the way you handle them. The method of joining the pieces is quite delicate. Therefore, when handling them you should protect them to avoid breakages. Chairs should be carried around carefully so that the arms do not break off. It is also not advisable for you to drag the antique pieces along the floor when moving them. This could ruin the bottom surfaces. When you take good care of your furniture, you will not need to repair them often.
