Get Involved With Indexing The 1940s Census

Indexing the 1940 census for the United States is an immense task and such work often relies upon the efforts of volunteers across the country and indeed the world to help create the searchable indexes.Once the mammoth task of indexing the 1940 census has been achieved, individuals will have access to some exceptional data on their ancestors and every individual living in the United States in 1940.Furthermore, some of this information is only available through census records, which make them such a valuable find for anyone tracing their family tree. As the United States is such a vast area, there are many opportunities to help index the census from 1940. The only state which has currently been indexed fully is Delaware, so there are plenty of opportunities remaining to get involved and help to index the remaining states.

If you are interested in helping to index the 1940 census there are a few simple steps that you need to go through first. You firstly need to locate the official indexing website for the United States. A simple search on an internet search engine and you will soon find this. Once you have found the website, you will need to register and fill out the requested information. After registration you will need to download the software to your own computer and then learn the process of indexing. There are plenty of video and printed tutorials available to help you start indexing.

When your indexing program has been opened, you will be provided with what is called index batches which you can download. Each batch is between 1 and 30 images which will be downloaded and saved on your own computer. On the 'Project Information' tab, you will be able to learn about the project and then begin typing in the requested information. After you have inputted all of the requested information, you will need to carefully quality check your work before you submit the batch and mark it as complete.

Time commitment

If you would like to volunteer some time to indexing the 1940 census, it is entirely up to you how much time a day, week or month you commit to the project. You can index whenever and wherever you wish; there are no specific minimum or maximum time scales you have to spend on the project.If you don't have time to finish indexing a batch in one go, the next time you return to the project, all of you work is saved so you can pick up where you left off.Each batch of censuses to be indexed takes approximately 30 minutes and you have a whole week in order to complete a single batch. However, if you don't or can't complete the batch within a week, it will be reallocated to another indexer. If you change your mind or you can't complete the indexing for some reason you can also return the batch to be completed by another volunteer.

In addition, you can also pick and choose which records you would like to index as there are always many different projects which are available for indexing. You can index many different documents from across the world which vary in their level of difficulty. Some of the subscription websites also have transcription and indexing opportunities, so if you are a member you may be able to get involved that way too. As soon as you have indexed your batch, it will become available on the official census website where it will become fully searchable.

If you get stuck along the way, there are many sources of help which are available to individuals using the indexing software. At the beginning, you will be provided with in depth project instructions which are available on the indexing site and there are also hints and tips provided next to each field to give you additional information to help you complete each field correctly and accurately. You can also consult the 'ask a question' page where you may find the answer you are looking for. But if after consulting all of the above you are still having problems, you can contact the support team who will be able to assist and provide lots of advice and information on how to complete your batch of indexing for the 1940 census. has digitized the 1940 Census and made it available to individuals researching their family tree.
