Road Construction: How to Stay Calm and Rational During Traffic Delays

June 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 169

Have you encountered a calm and rational driver lately? Yes, the one stuck in traffic due to road construction. I have, and thankfully had the opportunity to interview such a person after exiting the otherwise stressful situation. It was most incredible.

  • Situation: rush-hour traffic, backed up due to road construction, and one outraged screaming driver.
  • Driver: the cool, rational person, just observing and taking own action steps.

As a passenger, I had to do my best to contain myself and keep quiet for 42 minutes. That was hard, but with paper and pen I wrote my questions for this person, unbeknownst to him, he was about to become my next interviewee. After arriving at our destination I commented how calm he was as we experienced the traffic delay. I was determined to discover his strategies so I conducted a quick interview** in Question (Q) and Answer (A) format. Though the interview consisted of several questions, these are the two of most interest for this article.

  • Q: What were your thoughts while experiencing the traffic delay earlier?
  • A: "Well, knowing that the situation was out of my control, I felt my best option was to just wait my turn in traffic. I likened the situation to the phone recording that says, 'Your call will be answered in the order it was received.' I felt my best option was to wait my turn."
  • Q: I noticed you didn't say a word; you just put in a nature CD with birds singing and waterfalls. What was your reasoning behind that action?
  • A: "That's a strategy I learned years ago when I attended a life principles workshop on ways to stay calm when you're in a situation over which you have no control. That's just one of many I've learned through the years and seemed the most practical and accessible for that situation."

Now I ask you, the reader: Do you suppose many of us could benefit from these answers? I'd say, 'yes' and I'm certain many of us drivers will be given the opportunity to practice the above strategies in one form or another.

Road construction happens, so for best results in our traffic delays it pays to be prepared with a calming CD and organized positive thoughts while waiting our turn.

** The above interview questions and answers are used with permission from the interviewee.
