What You Need to Know About Propolis Dosage

Every supplement in this world is dosage dependent. If we consume it excessively, (either it is a natural or even synthetic one), it can cause harmful effects for us. In example, oxygen can cause a very harmful effect if it is given in a very large amount at one time. For the same case, a very toxic substance such as Arsenic, won't be dangerous to us if it is administered in an extremely small quantity. This exact concept is also applied to propolis. Even though it is known for its absence of side effects (except allergy), it will be a very wise action for us to put more attention regarding propolis dosage.

How much Is Too Much? There is a well-known scientific method to measure safe limit of a substance. It's called lethal dosage 50 or median lethal dosage. Lethal dosage 50 is a dosage that cause half of population of experiment subject to die. The standard unit for this measure is gram/kg. George A. Burdock conducted an in-depth experiment to know the toxicity level of bee propolis. Based on His study, it is known that the Lethal dosage 50 of propolis is more than 7.34 gram for each kilogram body weight. If you want to do the math, this limitation is equal to 1,174 Propolis capsules which contains 500 mg of bee propolis extract for a person whose weight is 176.4 lb. However, since the experiment was using mice as subject, the exact dosage would be different for human. But still, the dosage shown above is more than enough to claim that propolis is a very safe and nontoxic substance that we can consume in a fair amount.

What Will Possibly Happen If The Dosage Exceeded? Recently, in 2011, A. Montoro from Brazil examined possibilities of propolis side effects. He applied a very high concentration of ethanol extract propolis and then analyze its effect on human peripheral lymphocytes. Based on the result, it can be presumed that high concentration of Ethanol Extract Propolis is possible to cause DNA damage. His work conforms previous experiment in the same topic area. In another experiment, it is also shown that the primary botanical source of Brazilian bee propolis can contribute to DNA damages if it is administered in a very high amount. This experiment suggests that if the primary botanical source has that kind of harmful effect, then it is also possible for the derivative product in a form of propolis can cause the same negative effect. Even though all these experimental studies have not been proven in our daily lives, we should really take some preventive actions. European Safety Food and Administration proposed a dose for internal use of propolis to be 0.7 - 1.3 gram, with the maximum safe limit at two gram a day for each kilogram body weight. Of course, it is better to start consumption with a lower dose, both to test compatibility with allergic reaction and avoid it.
