Gluten-Free Cereals

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 184

People who have either gluten allergies, gluten intolerance, or celiac disease need to avoid eating any foods that contain gluten. For people who love cereal, this can be a difficult thing to deal with each morning. Fortunately, there are gluten-free cereals, and the purpose of this article is to share some of them with you.

For those who just can't do without their morning cereals, there is good news. There are many cereals, both hot and cold, that are available without gluten. What you want to look for are cereals that are made from gluten-free grains and flours. These will include:

  • Amaranth
  • Bean flours
  • Brown rice
  • Buckwheat
  • Millet
  • Quinoa

Some well-known brands are starting to make gluten-free versions of their popular cereals, but these may be hard to find. You need to make sure it says, "gluten-free" somewhere on the box.

Many lesser-known brands (at least, unknown to the general public) have been making gluten-free cereals for a while. These lesser known brands, and their cereals, include:

  • AltiPlano Gold - they have organic quinoa hot cereals
  • Ancient Harvest - they have Quinoa Flakes
  • Bakery On Main - they have a huge selection of granola cereals
  • Barbara's Bakery - they have Puffins (be aware that not all Puffins cereals are gluten-free, even if they say wheat-free)
  • Barkat - they have Organic Porridge Flakes (made from millet and rice)
  • Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods - they have Mighty Tasty Hot Cereal, Creamy Brown Rice Farina, and Roasted Kasha
  • Energ-G Foods - they have 100% Rice Bran
  • Enjoy Life Foods - they have a variety of granola cereals
  • Heartland's Finest - they have CereOs (like Cheerios, get it?), in several flavors, that are made with pinto bean flour and rice flour
  • Nature's Path - they have Organic Crispy Rice Cereal
  • Nu-World Foods - they have Original Snaps, Peach Os, and Puffed Cereals that are made with amaranth
  • Perky's Natural Foods - they have PerkyOs (in both original and apple cinnamon flavors), Nutty Flax, and Nutty Rice
  • The Birkett Mills - they have Cream of Buckwheat

The above list is not complete. The important thing is to make sure the cereals you buy specifically state they are gluten-free. If you think a cereal might be free of gluten but it doesn't say, such as with Corn Flakes, then contact the manufacturer and ask them directly.
