Regenerative Brake Systems for Airliners - Sure It's Possible, But Is It Feasible?

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 182

I suppose that every aerospace engineer that has ever gone through engineering school has considered regenerative of braking systems for airliners and aircraft. Indeed, myself I've written many articles on this topic, and lots of different theories on design. Every time a new aerospace group, a research team, or R&D department of some major aviation company splashes the headline with a new theory on how to reengineer something like this, I just smile.

Indeed, it often sends my mind back to the drawing board, thinking that perhaps I missed something, perhaps there's been some new discovery of new materials that could actually make this come to fruition in our time. Recently, there was yet another group which came to the same conclusion and stated that in 15 to 20 years this could actually be a reality and not a pipe dream anymore.

Space Mart had an interesting article not long ago titled; "Aircraft of the future could capture and re-use some of their own," written by the Staff Writers from London, UK on Feb 27, 2012. The article stated that;

"Taxiing is a highly fuel-inefficient part of any trip by plane with emissions and noise pollution caused by jet engines being a huge issue for airports all over the world," and "Currently, commercial aircraft spend a lot of time on the ground with their noisy jet engines running. In the future this technology could significantly reduce the need to do that," and "When an Airbus 320 lands, for example, a combination of its weight and speed gives it around three megawatts peak available power."

Indeed, I wonder if we really need 15 or 20 more years until this type of system is created or invented. In fact, in reconsidering this concept, I am reminded that aircraft tires have lots of steel belts inside to protect them from coming apart. Many airliners land at a very high rate of speed, and the tires have to be extremely strong. What if this steel belts inside of the tire work carbon nano-tubes with graphene coatings, and what if they can act like a battery inside taking the heat energy, along with some sort of friction device to charge them up?

If so, they could store that energy inside the rubber, the rubber being an insulator, and then slowly give that energy back to the hubs with a small motor to allow the aircraft to taxi in. It seems to me that we are on the verge of having materials that can do this, and so maybe it will not be a decade or more until we have systems that allow us to do this, and save the fuel in the process. Not to mention preventing all the noise on the ground. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.
