What Is Love and What Happened?

June 02, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 198

What is love? The question has baffled all those who have asked it through the ages. Poets, sages, philosophers, prophets all have pondered on this weighty query. All have meditated on this eternal mystery. Love has been the subject of poems and sonnets, elegies and revelations, indeed inspiration and desperation. Many a saga has been based on its foundation; many a hero has worn its meager yet brilliant armor. It has been pariah and outcast, reviled and despised, adored and worshipped and yet through it all love has always managed to retain that sweet, pure innocence that still invites everyone to come and be enveloped in every magical story that it weaves.

So once again, the question arises, what is love? Some would have us believe that it is divine. That it is the stuff of celestial poetry and angels are the bearers of it. Others hold that it is a mere chemical and physiological reaction to someone of suitable compatibility. While some, completely deny its existence at all. A definitive grasp of the term has been sought after throughout the ages and has eluded prophets and stable boys alike. So how can one seek to define it in the puny prisons of his words? One cannot. So what we do is define its components, its symptoms and effects, the lasting remnants of this strange phenomenon called love.

Indeed, even the most boggling of mysteries, in all fields of study and speculation are unraveled in this manner with a slow, detailed and analytical study of the symptoms and effects of the phenomenon in question. The effects of love, what an amusing text for a play it would make? Love drives us to ever greater heights of desire and desperation. It raises us up and girds our hearts. It makes us tender and strong, passionate and mellow, and all of this at the same time simultaneously. A lover is at once gentle and fierce, none can question his commitment, his loyalty and yet all marvel at the "fickle heart". Some would call love temporary madness, and there is certainly enough evidence to support this claim by all critics and lovers alike.

Love at the very last is the joining of two souls, two hearts in Holy Communion. It is the strongest and purest of bonds a human being can experience. The very melding of one soul into another, the symbiosis of two into one and all the world marvels at such a sight. We can attempt to grasp its mysteries, it's mysticism but the truth remains that none of us truly wishes for this mystery to be solved. Because the truth remains that its allure is as much due to the paradise it transports us to, as its unattainable essence.
