Travel Advice for Your Madagascar Wildlife Holiday

February 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

If you're planning a Madagascar wildlife holiday, you'll be heading to a nature lover's paradise to see some of the world's most exotic and unique wildlife. The natural side of the island is considered by many to be its top asset, and there are many good reasons to hold this point of view; but it's very important for visitors to remember that it is a modern African country, with all the good and bad that might entail. The British Foreign and Commonwealth offices issue advice for countries around the world, and it's important to check this before you travel. If you are to enjoy a Madagascar wildlife holiday in 2012, here is what they're currently saying.

Mother Nature

The island's location in the Indian Ocean makes it vulnerable to some of the natural challenges that an ocean seat can present. The blend of winds and currents mean that the island is susceptible to tropical cyclones. These occur annually and can cause large amounts of damage to infrastructure and the economy. This shouldn't be cause for you to reconsider your Madagascar wildlife holiday, however, but it's always important to keep an eye on the weather situation. In mid-February, for example, the local authorities issued a cyclone alert for all areas along the east coast from Sambava to Farafanga, with Cyclone Giovenna expected to bring wind-speeds of between 118-165 kilometres per hour. Always check the advice provided by the local authorities before leaving - although if you travel with a reputable company they will keep you well abreast of the situation.

Political Hot Potatoes

While not a concern for tourists, it's worth knowing that the political situation in Madagascar is unstable. This has been the situation for around three years and is subject to continuous change. However, any outbreaks of protest and volatility are extremely unlikely to affect foreign visitors. If, during your stay, you notice large gatherings in city centres or military installations, or are caught in any city crowds during your Madagascar wildlife holiday, make sure you keep a low profile. You should also not travel alone - an aspect which makes a specialised tour operator much more attractive than self-guided travel.

Local Custom

As with any country, it's a very good idea to make sure that you have at least a basic understanding of local beliefs and customs. In some parts of the island a system of taboos known as 'fady' regulate many aspects of daily life. These taboos can include forbidden foods, clothing rules, and many other considerations - there may even be areas that are off-limits to foreigners, although these are only likely to be found in very remote parts of the country. The best advice is to check online and speak to hotel or tour staff for the best advice.
