The Malaga authority has a strong sense of tourism knowing well the city sits comfortably along a prime location on Costa del Sol. To lure visitors, it has developed a list of enviable tourist attractions by combining various factors such as yearlong sunshine, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, and residential tourism. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in Spain, Malaga offers a range of top tourist attractions from historic architecture, art, & culture to outdoor activities. If you are pressed for time, here are the three best Malaga attractions.

*Malaga Cathedral

The Cathedral is a very important landmark in the history of Malaga. A piece of land with a mosque was transferred by the Catholic Kings for the cathedral in 1487 with construction starting only in 1528. The church was christened as the Cathedral of the Encarnacion because it was devoted to Virgen de la Encarnacion. The Gothic styled church designed by Diego de Siloe was destroyed in the earthquake, but built again in 1680. Since construction lasted over some centuries, the cathedral has witnessed three different architectural styles, namely Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Lack of funds hampered construction progress many-a-times resulting in incompletion of the right tower. Today, the church is also known as La Manguita” (one-armed woman) for this reason. One of the interesting aspects of the cathedral is the ceiling with 23 cupolas, the only church in Spain to feature it.

*Malaga Alcazaba

The Moors have left behind an outstanding cultural legacy in Spain. Of myriad Moorish historic structures, the Alcazaba is the best-preserved fortress in Malaga. Built on the ruins of a Roman theatre, the Alcazaba has more than 100 towers and 3 palaces. The best parts of the fortress other than its structure are the beautiful gardens and fountains. History tells, the fortress was first built in the 8th century but completely renovated in the 11th century by King Badis of Granada. Alcazaba is connected to another major landmark, the Gibralfaro Castle. Today, the fortress is home to the Archaeological Museum of the city.

*Picasso Museum

Famous painter and sculptor, Pablo Picasso was born and brought up in Malaga in 1881. Later he left for Madrid to study art and then for Barcelona and Paris. In remembrance of his contribution, Spain has dedicated six museums to Picasso one of which is in Malaga. In 2003, the government started a museum in the Palacio de Buenavista, a 16th century historic building with more than 250 works donated by Picasso’s family. In 2009 Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso that owned the collection merged with Fundación Museo Picasso Málaga which operated the musuem to form Museo Casa Natal ("Birthplace Museum").
