5 Essential Experiences for Your Everest Base Camp Trek

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 208

Completing an Everest Base Camp trek is an incredible feat in itself, and an unforgettable journey for many - but there are also several other memorable experiences to be had either as part of the trek or around it. Here is a list of the top five 'must-do' experiences for anyone setting their sights on Base Camp.

Explore: Kathmandu

Before you set out for your Everest Base Camp trek, it is well worth taking some time to see Kathmandu - whether it is a few days to explore or an afternoon's walking tour. Nepal's capital contains some astounding sights, such as the huge Swayanbunath Stupa (which offers wonderful views over the city) and Boudhanath Stupa, one of the most sacred sites of Tibetan Buddhism. Also worth a visit is Durbar Square, the ancient square at the heart of the city, and the Durbar Square museum - but there are also many little streets, lined with cafés or sparkling bead shops, that are wonderful to wander in.

Learn: Sherpa Cultural Centre, Thyangboche

The Buddhist monastery at Thyangboche village is at once a spiritual oasis and a place rightly proud of its Himalayan heritage - this is where Sherpa Tenzing Norgay spent time as a monk, before making history alongside Sir Edmund Hilary as the first two men to summit Everest. These days you'll find a Sherpa Cultural Centre in Thyangboche, containing rare Buddhist artefacts; you can also see the restored monastery and join other climbers in lighting a candle to ask for blessings as you continue your Everest Base Camp trek.

Taste: Rikikul

On an Everest Base Camp trek, sustenance is of vital importance. The food will vary along the way, but everyone should try traditional Sherpa food at some point. For cultures living at high altitude, cuisine is built around crops hardy enough to grow in sub-arctic climates - potatoes, being one such crop, is a staple, along with wild yams, lentils and barley. Rikikul, or potato pancakes - served with yak butter and spicy sauce - are a nourishing treat.

See: Khumbu Icefall

Anyone who completes an Everest Base Camp trek will have had their share of inspiring sights by the time they get there - but an even more astounding one awaits just beyond Base Camp at the Khumbu Icefall. This natural wonder is one of the most infamous parts of the South Col route towards Everest's summit, and even for those who don't intend to cross it, the cascade of ice caused by the motion of the Khumbu glacier is an arresting sight to behold.

Kala Pattar itself is a diminutive-looking mountain, whose name simply means 'black rock', but it is one of the most prized destinations in the area for one key reason: the amazing views it offers of Everest. Indeed, it is considered by many to be the best spot for taking photographs - worth every step of the climb.

Jude Limburn Turner is the Marketing Manager for Mountain Kingdoms, an adventure tour company who have run Everest Base Camp trek itineraries for over 20 years. They now offer treks and tours worldwide, including destinations in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Central and South East Asia.
