Why Kids Need Structure

Among the many challenges of parenting, having a child with ADHD can further complicate daily interactions. If, as a parent, you don't know how to efficiently interact with your child because of the particular way they process information, getting your child to follow directions may prove difficult. This article focuses on helping parents understand the nature of their child's ADHD, and what they can do to create meaningful interaction.

Children with ADHD have problems with their executive functioning. This means they have a hard time with the ability to think, plan ahead, organize, control impulses, and complete tasks. Our nannies essentially take over as the executive part of the child's brain and provide extra guidance while assisting the child in acquiring their own executive skills.

Children with ADHD usually are not acting willfully when they ignore, embarrass, or annoy their parents. Most children want to please their parents, do their homework, and clean their room. Children with ADHD, however, just don't know how to make this happen. As a parent it's important to keep this in mind as having ADHD can be as frustrating as dealing with someone who has it. Our nannies work with these children by being patient, compassionate, and providing plenty of support for their emotional, physical, and mental needs.

The most important job of a nanny caring for a child with ADHD, or a parent for that matter, is to set clear expectations and rules. Children with ADHD need consistent rules they can understand and follow. The rules of behavior and family chores should be simple and clear. If this means providing your child with a daily schedule detailing what's expected of him or her, than that is what it takes. Hang the rules and expectations in an easily identifiable location so there is no room for discussion as to what is expected.

Rewards and consequences also often work well for children with ADHD. Putting in an organized system that rewards good behavior and provides consequences for the bad behavior shows the child that for every action there is a reaction. It's important, however, to clearly explain the rules and what will happen if they are broken. It's equally important to reward good behavior even if the child is not expecting it. If the rewards start to wane, the child may act out to get a consequence since negative attention is better than no attention at all.
