Rehab Is Not Just for Celebrities

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 226

Every time a celebrity goes into rehab, the media finds out and broadcasts it everywhere. It becomes a source of negative gossip. Instead, people should be happy that the celebrity is taking steps to conquer his problem. This is easier said than done, but it is still possible.

Who Should Go to Rehab?

A person who spends an inordinate amount of time obtaining an addictive substance has usually become addicted to it. He should go to rehab. A person who requires more alcohol or more of a drug to feel its effects is becoming dependent on a substance or alcohol. A person who loses control of his life because of alcohol or drugs is probably addicted and should get into rehab as soon as possible.

Loss of Control:

A non-addicted person or a non-alcoholic likes the feeling that he gets when he experiences alcohol or drugs for the first time. These change brain chemistry and it moves him in a pleasurable direction, mentally and physically. This person may even abuse a drug or alcohol from time to time, but this does not necessarily make him an addict. He has to cross over the invisible threshold of control.

Non-Alcoholic and Consequences:

When a non-alcoholic gets a DUI, he decides that he's going to lay off the alcohol for awhile until everything settles down. He's embarrassed about the consequences of going to court and being reprimanded and fined by a judge. He's humiliated that he had to spend the night in the drunk tank at the jail, and he vows never to drink and drive again. Last, he is angry at himself for having to spend his hard-earned cash on an attorney to represent him at his court and DMV hearings. He vows to never drive drunk again -- and he keeps this vow.

Alcoholic and Consequences:

An alcoholic will experience negative consequences from his behavior while drunk, but he won't stop drinking. He will continue to drink and continue to experience negative consequences again and again. He is in denial on the severity of his problem. He has surrounded himself with a wall of rational defenses for his drinking and its consequences. He is literally unable to experience the full magnitude of his drinking problem.

Going to Rehab:

When an addict or alcoholic goes to rehab, the biggest factor he has to deal with is his wall of rational defenses for drinking or using drugs. Group therapy is the most effective tool for chipping away at this almost impenetrable wall.

Anyone with a drinking or drug problem should not hesitate to go to rehab. There are a lot more people than just celebrities who need help getting off drugs and alcohol.
