Q and A - How to Control Binge Eating Habits

February 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 170

Is there any chance you could give advice to someone so severely in need of how to control binge eating? I have suffered several years now and I am desperate to overcome it.

The problems tend to arise when I am alone mainly but sometimes also comes along when I am stressed. I think it is trying to numb the boredom and pain of being alone.

I have lost weight twice but each time I have returned to the binge eating ways. I really want this gone forever.

Please help

My Answer:

I used to do the same, my binge episodes were mostly at night when I was alone. The biggest things that helped me overcoming doing that is planning, visualizing, and distracting.

As far as planning, I would plan my meals and snacks the day before so that I knew I would eat healthy. Sometimes a binge would occur when I had a strong urge of hunger because I hadn't had food in a long time (5-6 hours or more). Now I made sure I eat at least something every 3 hours. This also helps me to eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day rather than 2 or 3 big meals.

Visualizing has been the biggest motivator for me. Just visualize yourself on a daily basis feeling and seeing yourself in your mind as already thin in your everyday clothes. You might not be there yet but it's amazing how if you keeping thinking that you are thin, your mind will automatically work on ways of getting there and becoming that image. Your mind is so powerful in so many ways.

Another way I use the power of visualizing is imagining how I want a particular event to go. For instance, I had a hard time at night being able to control my eating habits. So on my way home, while driving, I would visualize walking in the door to my home, drinking plenty of water, washing up, and laying down for bed to relax.

I also use visualizing when I go to places where there will be a lot of food like parties. I will visualize beforehand eating slowly and eating only small portions. You'll be amazed at your self-control when you try this technique. I still use this technique almost everyday, for instance even before I eat lunch with my co-workers, I quickly visualize eating slowly and enjoying a small meal.

The last thing I use is distraction. If I'm bored and feel the need to eat food when I know I'm not really that hungry I'll go play a game on my computer, watch a movie, call or text a friend, read a book, go for a walk or anything that will keep me busy and keep my mind off food. If it's been 20 minutes and I'm still thinking about food I'll visualize just enjoying a small treat and then let myself have it. Also I visualize stopping after I enjoy that small treat and not letting myself binge.

I had plenty of other techniques that I have in my program, but I think these 3 are best to start with and will have the biggest impact based on what you said was causing the binge eating.

I have one other exercise I'd like you to try for the next 14 days starting today. I do this everyday and it has worked best from what I've learned on how to control binge eating. It's also been researched on thousands of people to be the most effective way to bring your goals into reality.

Every Day for the Next 14 Days:

1) Write down on a piece of paper your major goal as if it's already real.

For example, I write down: I weigh 118 lbs. I feel so skinny and love the way I feel in my clothes. I eat small meals throughout the day and exercise 5 times a week for at least twenty minutes.

Make sure to state your goal in the positive. For instance don't write down things like "I want to stop binge eating" (binge eating is negative), or "I'm not fat anymore" (fat is also negative).

Also I visualize myself every morning and every night being my ideal weight.

I wish you the best of luck and please let me know how the 14 day challenge goes! And if you have any more questions just let me know.
