May Every Day Be Thanksgiving

February 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 125

Although we do not celebrate thanksgiving in this country, I have made many friends in the USA and took the time to reflect and give thanks. In a chaotic world ravaged with war, greed, radical climate changes and economic insecurity, I am sincerely thankful for:

The 12 step program, a design for better living;

The Serenity prayer;

Acceptance and willingness;

Our code of love and tolerance;

Spiritual growth;

Paying it forward;

The opportunity to make a difference in the world, however small;

Reminders to be grateful;

The lessons of humility.

Gratitude is the right attitude during thanksgiving. Starting out in recovery is no easy task. The changes we need to make can leave us bewildered and full of fear. I remember when there were days when I felt there was no light at the end of the tunnel, my sponsor suggested that I make a gratitude list - a list of not what I didn't have or desired but what I already had in life. This helped me realise how fortunate I was compared to others. It made me realise that materialistic things mean nothing compared to the values we learn through taking the steps. I now do this on a regular basis because it is the simple things we forget about that mean the most. These include:

My two wonderful sons who keep me young at heart;

My family who have tolerated me all these years;

A roof over my head and a warm bed at night;

A computer to type on so I can reach out to others;

Books to read that keep me knowledgeable and motivated;

A higher power that has kept me safe through days of despair;

Prayer for guidance to do the right thing;

My recovery friends that have me experience, strength and hope;

Being healthy which is a miracle after all the self abuse.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Thanksgiving is a humbling experience for me as I give respect to what has been so freely given and taught to me. This includes:

Unconditional love;

Admitting my mistakes;

Making amends when they are due;

Finding the courage to face fears;

Having a clear conscience;

Being free of resentments;

Accepting that I am human and no better than anyone else;

Tolerance of other people's shortcomings and a respect for their opinions;

Praying for those who show hostility for they do not understand.

May every day of the rest of your life be thanksgiving and fulfilled with the blessings of life.
