How to Find a Local AA Meeting

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 134

Whether you are new to AA, moving or visiting a new area, working the program is instrumental to getting and staying sober. Your sobriety is your responsibility and it is imperative to use the tools that are available to you.

Use the Internet

If you have access to the internet, you can use your favorite search engine to search for AA meetings in the local area using the city and state name or the zip code. Not all available meetings in the area may be publicized on the net but you will be able to at least find the local AA chapter in the area. You will be able to call them to get information about meeting places and times.

There are also local AA chapter sites that may provide meeting information. If the meeting location that you find is not convenient, go anyway. You can always ask someone there about other locations that may be available.

Use the Phone

If you do not have access to the Internet, you can surely get to a phone book. Look for Alcoholics Anonymous in the book and there will be either a local chapter number or a crisis prevention line that you can call to get meeting information. You can even call the local hospital or treatment center for this information. It never hurts to ask. The worse thing that can happen is that the person you speak with doesn't know the information but he or she can surely point you in the right direction.

Plan Ahead

If you are already in an Alcoholics Anonymous program, plan ahead for your trip or your move. Make sure that your sponsor is part of your planning. A part of maintaining your sobriety is making sure that you are prepared for almost every possible situation. Being in a new place and having to make new friends can be a challenge. Doing all of this while staying sober can be even more of a challenge. Remember, you are in charge of your sobriety and you want to stay clean.

Beyond making sober friends and finding meetings to go to regularly, make sure that you find some sober activities to get into. This will help keep your mind and time occupied. If you are making a permanent move, start your job search early. Stay in touch with your current sponsor until you have a sponsor locally. Remember, it works if you work it!
