What Is Baby Acne?

April 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 222

First, baby acne is very common and should also be temporary. It can appear on their cheeks, forehead, chin and sometimes be noticed on their backs. It can be present at birth but usually occurs at 3-4 weeks of age. Baby acne can look similar to teenage acne. You'll notice red or white raised bumps, which may be surrounded by reddish colored skin.

If your baby's skin is irritated by fabric, saliva or possibly detergent it can be more pronounced. You may also notice it more when your baby is hot or fussy and there is an increased blood flow to the skin.

It has been suggested by experts that the cause of baby acne is connected to the hormones the baby received from their mother at the end of the pregnancy. (However, I also found enough experts to dispute this fact, but I still thought it was worth mentioning).

The tiny white bumps seen as acne are also referred to as MILIA. Milia occurs when dead skin becomes trapped in tiny pockets near the surface of your baby's skin. These bumps will go away on their own, usually in a couple weeks although they can last a couple months.

It isn't recommended that you do anything to try to clear up this condition. Most people are prone to wanting to squeeze or pick the head of the pimple. Do Not do this because it could cause scarring. Your baby's skin is very sensitive so aggressively washing or scrubbing is a very bad idea (at any time).

There has been some connection to babies skin reacting to laundry detergent, oily lotions or certain medicines that you may have taken during nursing. In any case your baby's skin will return to normal with a clear complexion. Just be patient.

However, if you're child's skin bumps don't clear up in a few weeks consult with your babies doctor. They may prescribe a mild topical medication if the acne is severe or long lasting.

From one mom to another, here are some additional gentle reminders:

Do-Simply wash your babies face gently with a mild baby soap and cool water, once a day and pat dry. Washing too often can be drying and further irritate your baby's skin.

Do Not-Use over the counter acne medicines, do not scrub, do not use hot water, do not use oils, do not pick.

In the meantime enjoy the heck out of that new baby of yours.
