Rosy Cheeks and Acne Rosacea

April 03, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 168

On Santa Claus and toddlers, rosy cheeks are adorable, but on people between the ages of 30 and 50, it can be an embarrassing skin condition called acne rosacea. Rosacea doesn't care what gender you are, it affects both men and women. In most cases, rosacea seems more prevalent in women, but can occur with more severity in men.

Although it is called acne rosacea, it isn't actually acne. Rosacea does share some of its basic properties with acne, but there are some differences.

Acne Rosacea - Signs and Symptoms

Acne rosacea presents itself with several common symptoms. The first symptom is a redness appearing in the middle of your face (nose, forehead, cheeks, and chin). The second symptom is pimples. The appearance of pimples is why it is called, acne rosacea, but acne doesn't occur in every case. Why does the face get red? Well, the appearance of redness is due to the fact that the bloods vessels supplying red blood to those areas become enlarged. When these blood vessels enlarge, they birth small red lines called, telangiectasis.

Rosacea is a lot like disappearing/reappearing ink. It can appear at anytime, disappear, and then reappear again at anytime. This is because, like more skin conditions, there are stressors that can cause breakouts of flare-ups. Despite all of the downsides associated with rosacea, here is an upside. Those who suffer from rosacea don't have to deal with the appearance of white heads or black heads.

In severe cases, the nose and eyes can be affected most. Rosacea can cause the nose to grow and widen. Also, bumps may appear that can disfigure your nose. In some cases, surgery might be necessary to repair any breathing problems. If a burning occurs in the eyes, see your doctor. Burning in the eyes due to rosacea can actually cause vision impairment.

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but the reasons behind flare-ups are easy to explain. High emotional levels is what cause acne rosacea. During periods of fear, stress, embarrassment, or anxiety rosacea can rear is ugly head. Why? Well, when these emotions occur, blushing can be the result. It is believed the blushing brings on rosacea in people who are susceptible.

Blushing isn't the only cause for flare-ups; overexposure to the sun, exposure to strong winds, or even cold weather can make that flush in your cheeks graduate into rosacea.

Acne Rosacea - Is There a Cure?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for rosacea. There is good news; rosacea can be treated to prevent or even lessen the severity of a flare-up. Your doctor can prescribe medications that can help reduce the symptoms. It isn't recommended that you use over the counter acne treatment. Regular acne treatments contain harsh chemicals that can further irritate your already irritated skin.

Acne rosacea is an embarrassing condition, but it isn't a hopeless one. Visiting with your doctor, and following his instructions can really help in your battle against rosacea.
